What is Pilates?
Pilates is an evidence-based physical fitness system that was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates.
It builds flexibility, strength, and lean muscle tone, as well as improving balance, posture and body awareness. It is used for general fitness, rehabilitation, and correcting musculoskeletal imbalances in the body.
The emphasis is on strengthening the core, lengthening the body and aligning the spine, using the principles of breathing, control, precision, concentration, centring and flow. In recognising that mental and physical health are essential to each other, pilates is a method of total body conditioning.
